Obsidian Kerttu, the stunning model featured on the cover of Gothic Beauty’s Issue 48, has captivated audiences with her versatile gothic looks. Based in Eastern Europe, Obsidian has worked with numerous designers, utilizing her vast collection of wigs and impressive makeup skills to bring nearly any gothic aesthetic to life. Behind the lens is the talented photographer Martina Spoljaric, known for her love of all things macabre. Together, they’ve created hauntingly beautiful images, often involving themes like bats, castles, and mythical creatures, which bring a gothic dream to reality.
Obsidian, the cover of Gothic Beauty has a minimalist vibe. Was there a specific inspiration behind this image?
“There wasn’t a deep backstory,” Obsidian explains. “It was a spontaneous moment with Martina. We share a great relationship, so we often come up with ideas as we go along. It was a rainy afternoon, and we wanted to capture that ambiance, blending the natural elements with a strong, modern gothic look. We both love shooting outdoors, using nature as part of the scene. We aimed for the wind in my hair and the fading light of the sky to create that mysterious atmosphere.”
Martina, many of your photos, including the cover, are shot outdoors. Why do you prefer natural settings to a studio?
“I’m drawn to the unpredictability and richness of outdoor photography,” Martina says. “Natural light gives every shot a unique quality, and there are endless possibilities when working with the environment. A studio can feel limiting in comparison.”
Martina, your portfolio includes a variety of styles, but what is it about the gothic genre that keeps bringing you back?
“I used to wear gothic styles myself, and I’ve always been drawn to its dark and mysterious allure,” Martina shares. “There’s a certain beauty in its intensity and depth that keeps pulling me in.”
Obsidian, what would you say is your personal style?
“I’d say it’s Victorian/trad goth at the core, but I love mixing that with other influences. Lately, I’ve been blending traditional goth with street and urban goth, along with an occult or witchy vibe. I enjoy the balance between looking casual and edgy, yet still maintaining that chic and mysterious feel.”
Do you typically style your own looks, or do you work with a stylist?
“I usually take charge of my own styling,” Obsidian says. “I prefer a minimal and classy approach, focusing on details. When I’m involved in a big project with a team, I’m happy to collaborate with stylists, but otherwise, I enjoy putting my own looks together.”
Your background in graphic design seems to influence your work. How does it impact your modeling?
“Definitely,” Obsidian says. “Graphic design has taught me how to appreciate art, compose visuals, and use elements like space and color effectively. My training helps me create a stronger sense of composition, whether I’m preparing an outfit or posing for a shoot. I try to avoid clichés and aim for something more refined in my work.”
Martina, you often use special effects in your gothic photography. How long does it typically take to finish a photo once the shot is taken?
“It really depends on the shot and the concept,” Martina explains. “Some photos may take only 20 minutes, but others require up to an hour or more to perfect. Each image has its own process.”
If you had unlimited resources, what kind of projects would you pursue, Martina?
“I’d love to travel and find breathtaking locations, far away from the hustle of big cities. I’d explore the world, seeking out natural beauty for my shoots,” Martina says, her excitement clear.
Obsidian, where do you draw inspiration from for your style?
“From a young age, I was enchanted by shows like The Addams Family and Beetlejuice, and Tim Burton’s films made a huge impact on me. As I grew older, bands like The Cure, London After Midnight, and Dead Can Dance influenced my journey into goth culture. I also find inspiration in gothic literature and architecture, especially the periods I studied—medieval and historical royal families, castles, and ball gowns. In fashion, Razorcandi, Wednesday Mourning, and Lady Amaranth are some of my biggest influences.”
Martina, what inspires your photography?
“For me, it’s a mix of dance and nature,” Martina says. “I’ve always been drawn to movement and the organic beauty of the natural world, which I love capturing in my work.”
What else do you do besides modeling, Obsidian?
“I work as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. I also enjoy blogging, makeup, drawing, crafting—anything hands-on, really. I travel a lot and enjoy the simple moments with my fiancé,” Obsidian shares.
Do you have any advice for aspiring models or stylists?
“My advice would be to always be yourself and find your own unique style. Attitude plays a huge role—be friendly, professional, and stay true to your vision. It’s important to set goals and work towards them with persistence. The path may not always be glamorous, and rejection is a part of it, but that’s when you need to keep your head up. Surround yourself with reliable professionals and work with reputable agencies.”
Obsidian and Martina’s collaboration highlights not only their individual talents but also their shared passion for creating captivating, gothic-inspired imagery. Their work continues to inspire those who are drawn to the beauty of the dark, the mysterious, and the artistic.
